This page outlines the methodology used to calculate demographic indicators for different geographies.
Methodology
Housing statistics are collected from the 2021 Census conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Public housing
Public housing includes dwellings rented from state and territory housing providers and community housing providers. Rankings are calculated as the population-weighted percentile score of each area, with higher a higher ranking indicating a higher share of public housing.
Owner-occupied
Owner-occupied housing includes dwellings owned with a mortgage and owned outright. Rankings are calculated as the population-weighted percentile score of each area, with higher a higher ranking indicating a higher share of owner-occupied dwellings.
Private rental
Private rental housing includes all rented dwellings that are not rented from state and territory housing providers or community housing providers. Rankings are calculated as the population-weighted percentile score of each area, with higher a higher ranking indicating a higher share of privately rented dwellings.
Coverage
Housing statistics cover all Australian states and territories. Statistics are available for statistical areas level 1 (SA1), suburbs and localities (suburb), and 2024 local government areas (LGA) defined under the Australian Statistical Geography Standard Edition 3. Only geographies with significant populations are included due to data quality concerns.
Reference period
All housing statistics are derived from 2021 Census data, with a reference period of August 2021.
